The federal government wants to do more to combat discrimination against Sinti and Roma.

As the Federal Ministry of the Interior announced on Wednesday, the federal government has decided on a strategy against antigypsyism.

This provides for a contact point to institutionalize and promote dialogue with Sinti and Roma.

"We resolutely oppose racism, exclusion and discrimination against Sinti and Roma," said Interior Minister Nancy Faeser (SPD).

During the last electoral period, an independent commission presented a report on discrimination against Sinti and Roma in Germany.

He comes to the conclusion that experiences of discrimination for Sinti and Roma in Germany are still part of everyday life, for example in schools, when in contact with authorities or the police or in the neighborhood.

The commission recommended that politicians appoint an antiziganism commissioner at the federal level and set up a federal-state commission.

In addition, the experts call for an end to the discrimination against Sinti and Roma persecuted under National Socialism compared to other groups of victims, and for Roma who have fled to Germany to be recognized as a particularly vulnerable group.

The appointment of an antiziganism commissioner was agreed in the coalition agreement between the SPD, the Greens and the FDP, but has not yet taken place.

With the antiziganism strategy adopted on Wednesday, the federal government is complying with a request from the EU Commission to submit its own plans for the EU Roma Strategy 2030.
