A 55-year-old traveler was checked by customs officials on February 15 with 35,000 euros and 184 carats of diamonds in his suitcase at the Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne station (Savoie).
The man was on board a TGV connecting Milan (Italy) to Paris.
Suspected of money laundering, he was arrested.
The Albertville court (Savoie) acquitted him on Monday, reports

In immediate appearance, the respondent explained that he was a dealer in precious stones.
The diamonds in his possession had to be examined by an expert in Belgium.
The batch indicated on the document provided by the individual did not however correspond exactly to the contents of his suitcase.
72,500 euro fine
Regarding the money, he said it was for savings and that he wanted to donate it to an Orthodox Jewish school.
The 50-year-old was fined 72,500 euros for customs offenses related to the non-declaration of the liquid and incomplete documents.
