19-year-old Siamese twins took part in elections in northern India for the first time on Sunday.

For the occasion, they were equipped with dark glasses so that everyone could be sure to vote by secret ballot.

Sohan and Mohan Singh are connected at the hip and have several organs and legs in common.

They live in a charity home where they were abandoned at birth.

Dressed in colorful checkered shirts, wearing black turbans, the brothers voted in the Punjab state elections.

Conjoined twins, Sohan and Mohan Singh from Punjab hail the banner of 'No Voter To Be Left Behind'.

One electoral card each

“I felt really good.

They (the election authorities) made good arrangements for us to vote,” Sohan said from the holy city of Amritsar where they live.

“We were provided with dark glasses so we couldn't see who we were voting for in the voting booth.

".

The Siamese, having each received an electoral card, exhibited their inked fingers proving that they had voted and encouraged the population to take part, like them, in the elections.

The Singh brothers work in the state electric department but earn only one salary.

They didn't want to resort to surgery to be separated because one of them was in danger of dying, Sohan said.

" We do not have a choice.

I can't afford to lose him,” he added.

Punjab is one of five states in the country currently holding elections to renew their assemblies.

India, the world's largest democracy, has a secret ballot system to ensure free and fair elections, with all citizens over the age of 18 eligible to vote.
