• 1:32 a.m .: The UN Security Council will meet

The UN Security Council, at the request of its Western members in particular, will hold a public emergency meeting at 9 p.m. (2 a.m. GMT) on Monday on Russia's recognition of the independence of the separatist territories in Ukraine. .

The countries behind the request for an emergency session, which relied on a letter from Ukraine to the UN, are the United States, France, the United Kingdom, Ireland , Norway and Albania.

Mexico joined their request.

Russia, current President of the Security Council in February, and who controls the agenda, wanted to impose a closed session but the United States opposed it.

Volodymyr Zelensky denounced, Tuesday in an address to the Ukrainian nation, the recognition of the independence of the two separatist "republics" of Donbass by Moscow.

"Ukraine calls Russia's latest acts a violation of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of our state," he said, adding that the Ukrainians were "on their land", and had no " afraid of nothing or anyone" and would not cede "a single piece of the country". 

The Ukrainian president added that he expected "clear" and "effective" support from Western allies for his country in the face of Russia.

"It is very important to see now who our true friend is."
