Experts at Expo 2020 Dubai confirmed that technical innovations and forward-looking strategies constitute pioneering solutions to meet the major challenges of global food systems, at a time when the world is striving to secure the food needs of an additional two billion people by 2050.

They added, during a discussion session hosted by the World Council at the Dubai Exhibition Center at “Expo 2020 Dubai” entitled “Farms of the Future”, that estimates indicate the need to increase global food production by up to 70% over the next 30 years, and therefore the solution lies in implementing Innovative ideas that contribute to achieving food security.

Specialists and academics dealt with topics related to the effects of climate change, intensive agricultural activities, the decline of agricultural land, and water purity, which led to a decline in food production rates.

They explained that non-traditional farming methods and solutions provided by modern technologies, such as robots, etc., are able to increase productivity and enhance food quantities.

Extended experiences

"Today's agricultural knowledge about the crops we grow, and methods of irrigation and fertilization, is the result of hundreds of years of experience gained by our ancestors and those working in the cultivation of different crops in certain locations, and they acquired that knowledge, but today, Because of climate change, what we know either cannot be applied, or we can apply it without achieving the desired results.”

"In this situation, one alternative is to wait another 200 years to gain new experiences and learn how to apply them, and this is a futile option, so the best we can do is employ digital technologies, sensors and artificial intelligence," she added.

efficiency and productivity

During the "Technology of Tomorrow" sessions, hosted by the Dubai Exhibition Center, innovators and stakeholders presented innovative ideas and technologies that contribute to increasing global food production.

The Director of Market Solutions at the Livestock Improvement Corporation (LIC), Jason Schreyer, said that efficiency, productivity and sustainability were key points on which agricultural technology solutions in the livestock sector were based.

AgUnity CEO David Davis emphasized the importance of technology and connectivity for low-income farmers to develop efficiency in food production.

Innovators from Estonia and Hungary demonstrated the benefits of smart indoor gardens, shortening supply chains, vertical farming, recipes for growing crops, using water-efficient drones, as well as spraying agricultural pesticides, resulting in zero waste and increased food productivity.

The sessions came within the week of Food, Agriculture and Livelihoods at “Expo 2020 Dubai”, which concludes today, which is the ninth week of the 10 thematic weeks that are organized over a period of six months, which is the period of “Expo 2020 Dubai”.

Vesna Bingen:

• “Our agricultural knowledge about crops and irrigation methods is the result of hundreds of years of experience.”

Jason Schreyer:

• «Efficiency, productivity and sustainability are the points on which agricultural technology solutions in livestock are based».

Solar capsule

Alanoud Al Hashemi, CEO of The Future Company, stressed the need to find solutions supported by data and technology, referring to its project of integrating technologies in a solar-powered capsule, called “GAIA”, that provides an advanced cultivation system managed by artificial intelligence by using energy. Renewable water throughout the year, with 60% less water, and this system contributed to enhancing productivity by 30%.
