Possible summit

Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Joe Biden have "in principle" agreed on a meeting.

This was stated by the French Élysée Palace in a press release on Monday morning.

The announcement came after French President Emanuel Macron conducted intensive telephone diplomacy on Sunday, which included talks with Putin, Biden, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

But nothing seems to have been carved in stone yet.

More cautious statements came from the United States and Russia later on Monday.

US national security adviser Jake Sullivan says that the US is always ready to talk to avoid a war, but at the same time states that it is ready to respond to a possible attack.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Putin and Biden could meet if they deemed "feasible," but stressed that it was too early to talk about specific plans for a summit.

Allegations of attacks

Russia says five Ukrainian "saboteurs" were killed in an attempt to break through the Russian border.

According to the Russian military, a number of Ukrainian military vehicles were destroyed in Rostov, on the Russian side of the border.

Earlier in the day, the Russian security service FSB stated that bombing from Ukrainian territory had completely destroyed a border post on Russian soil in Rostov.

The Ukrainian military responded immediately that the information about a border attack was false news.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba has denied the Russian allegations and is calling on Russia to end its "factory of lies".

Independence for the breakaway republics

Putin told the Russian Security Council on Monday that he needed to "consider" recognizing the breakaway republics of Donetsk and Luhansk in eastern Ukraine.

Earlier on Monday, leaders of the two breakaway republics called on Putin to recognize them.

During the meeting, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shojgu claimed that Ukraine had mobilized militarily around the breakaway republics, something that was denied by the Ukrainian side.
