“The risk of a storm surge flooding the tunnel is very small, but if it does, it will have enormous consequences.

We are therefore investing in a comprehensive storm surge program to strengthen the protection of the connection against the almost unlikely storm surge ", says construction director Bengt Hergart in a press release from the Öresund Bridge.

Defensive ramparts and walls

Over the next six years, protection in the form of protective dikes and walls, among other things, will be built both on the artificial island Pepparholm, which is part of the Öresund connection, and on the Kastrup peninsula.

The reason is that the risk of severe flooding in the Sound today is considered to be greater than was thought when the Öresund connection was built.

The ambition is for the connection to be protected against a storm surge that statistically only occurs every ten thousand years.
