In the UK, a 60-year-old woman was sentenced to five and a half years in prison for stealing £4.2 million worth of diamonds in London in 2016.
That is around 5 million euros.
Placed in detention, this professional thief was only fined 244 pounds sterling (293 euros), reports
The Guardian
, relayed by
Slate.
Under British law, financially, the London courts had no choice but to order the defendant to pay the money she had on her when she was arrested in France….
i.e. less than 300 euros.
In 2016, this woman posed as a diamond expert commissioned by wealthy Russian clients to have seven stones appraised at the Boodle jeweler in London's Mayfair district.
Thanks to CCTV cameras, the investigators were able to see that the thief had replaced the diamonds with vulgar stones.
She then fled with the precious stones towards Brittany, where she was finally arrested before being extradited.
According to information from the
Guardian
, the thief tried during her trial to have her sister who died in 2019 accused, without success.
Two men found to be accomplices were respectively sentenced to eight months and three years in prison.
Diamonds remain untraceable.
