She returned to her 213 containers carrying waste.. Tunisia: We will not be a "dumpster" for Italy!

On Saturday evening, Tunisia re-shipped 213 containers carrying household waste to Italy, after illegally importing them from it in 2020, according to what the Tunisian Merchant Navy and Ports Office announced.

The containers that were stored in the commercial port of Sousse have been gradually loaded since Friday on a Turkish ship chartered by the Italian authorities, according to the Director of Communication at the Office of the Merchant Navy and Ports, Al-Sahbi Azzouz.

Azzouz added that the ship left the port of Sousse on Saturday at eight o'clock local time.

A Tunisian company imported about 280 containers in 2020 that it claimed contained plastic waste intended for recycling, while Tunisian law prohibits the import of household waste.

Twenty-six people, including former Environment Minister Mustafa Laroui, are being tried in this case for their possible involvement in the illegal import of household waste.

This case sparked a scandal in Tunisia and sparked protest movements, during which demonstrators expressed their refusal to make their country Italy's "dustbin".

The case highlighted the global waste trade that has grown despite strict international legislation aimed at preventing rich countries from disposing of their hazardous waste in poor countries.
