Bardell explained that in 1991, an agreement was concluded between the United States and Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev on the non-expansion of NATO eastward to the borders of Russia.

“You can’t fight either with Russia or with the United States, but you need to look for a balanced approach,” he said.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg believes that the alliance has not violated its promise not to expand to the east.
