Uppsala's racial biology institute was the first of its kind in the world, funded by state funds.

From the opening in 1922, the research lasted for more than thirty years before it was closed down in 1959. Initially, the institute was located in the building that is today called the Dean's House, near Uppsala Cathedral.

At Uppsala University, in Gustavianum's archives, there are today remains of at least 46 Sami, preserved from the collections.

Reminder of racism against Sami

To honor the memory of the Sami who were used in racial biological research, a demonstration takes place outside Gustavianum on Sunday 20 February between 16:45 and 17:15.

In collaboration between Amnesty Sápmi and the Sami Association in Uppsala, 46 candles will be lit in connection with speech, yoik and a minute of silence.
