The Greek Coast Guard announced that a fire broke out today, Friday, on a ferry sailing from Greece to Italy, carrying 288 people.

There have been no reports of deaths or injuries so far.

The fire, whose cause is unknown, broke out near the Greek island of Corfu in the Ionian Sea.

A video clip published by local newspapers showed the ferry caught on fire, and thick smoke rose from it.

The Italian-flagged ferry Euroferi Olympia sailed from Igoumenitsa, the largest port in western Greece, to the Italian port of Brindisi, 9 hours away.

The coast guard said that there were 237 passengers and a crew of 51 people on board the ferry, and that 3 coast guard ships participated in the rescue efforts.

Greek authorities reported that the passengers and crew of the ferry were taken on lifeboats to the island of Corfu.
