In the midst of massive tensions in the Ukraine-Russia crisis, American President Joe Biden wants to consult with allies on how to proceed.

Topics of the phone switch this Friday afternoon should include the increase in Russian troops on the border with Ukraine and other diplomatic efforts, the White House said.

In addition to Canada's Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, leading politicians from Germany, France, Great Britain, Italy, Poland and Romania are to take part in the talks, Trudeau's office announced on Thursday evening.

The European Union and NATO are also represented.

Meanwhile, it was announced that US Secretary of State Antony Blinken plans to meet his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov next week - as long as Russia does not invade Ukraine.

Blinken suggested meeting Lavrov “in Europe next week.

The Russians have responded with suggested dates for late next week, which we accepted on condition that there is no Russian invasion of Ukraine," State Department spokesman Ned Price said Thursday night.

Russia had massed more than 100,000 soldiers on the border with Ukraine in the past few months.

The United States has repeatedly warned that Russia could invade the neighboring country in the coming days.

Russia rejects this and for its part states that it feels threatened by NATO.
