• Investigating judge in Paris, Sabine Khéris obtained the confessions of Michel Fourniret in the disappearance of Estelle Mouzin.

  • Obstinate as well as discreet, she investigates this file in a methodical way in order to try to find the body of the little girl buried by the ogre of the Ardennes.

  • This Monday, she takes the killer to Ville-sur-Lumes for a new series of searches.

The weather forecast predicts rain… For the All Saints holidays, Sabine Khéris has chosen to go to the Ardennes with one of the worst serial killers in France.

From this Monday, the oldest investigating judge of the Paris court will be in Ville-sur-Lumes with Michel Fourniret.

She has already spent a week there in June.

But she has not found the place where "the ogre of the Ardennes" is suspected of having buried little Estelle Mouzin.

So, she returns there for new excavations.

"She's obstinate...", breathes Corinne Herrmann, lawyer for Eric Mouzin, the girl's father.

Obstinate, hardworking, even needy on the one hand.

Discreet, fleeing the lights, in his bubble on the other.

These are the adjectives that constantly come up in the mouths of those who know this magistrate in the process of solving one of the worst criminal enigmas of the last twenty years.

At almost 56 years old – she will celebrate them on November 29 – it was she who collected the confessions of Michel Fourniret in the disappearance of Estelle Mouzin.

“I recognize there a being who is no longer there through my fault,” Fourniret ended up saying, in one of the convoluted formulas of which he has the secret, on March 5, when she showed him a photo of the schoolgirl disappeared in Guermantes (Seine-et-Marne), January 9, 2003.

Monique Olivier only wants to confide in her

These confessions did not fall by chance on the office of the magistrate, located on the 13th floor of the courthouse.

To get there, the judge patiently built her strategy.

“In the past, the investigation services wanted to move forward on this file in order to have a confession.

They broke their teeth there, remembers Richard Delgenes, the lawyer of Monique Olivier, the ex-wife of Fourniret.

Sabine Khéris, she took the time to do things well, to launch all the expertise that had to be done for a long time, and to leave nothing to chance.

“And especially not the confidence of the serial killer and his ex-wife.

If Sabine Khéris took over the Mouzin file in September 2019, she has known the Fourniret / Olivier couple since 2016. Since she investigated the file on the disappearances of Joanna Parrish and Marie-Angèle Domèce for which "the ogre of the Ardennes" is put on trial.

"She was able to establish a real dialogue with them during long auditions", summarizes Corinne Herrmann.

Result: on February 5, 2019, it was to her, and to her alone, that Monique Olivier confided her desire to discuss the Estelle Mouzin file “from now on… The machine was then launched.

And nothing will stop him.

“You are a good player”, loose Fourniret

Because once seized, the judge is not content to religiously listen to the killer spout nonsense, as he is used to.

She tries to enter his world.

Almost in his head.

She began to read the Russian authors he was fond of – Dostoyevsky and Gogol, in particular –, sometimes listened to France Musique like him and, above all, she took the time to receive him.

Where some judges dispatch the hearings in an hour or two, those of Michel Fourniret often last several days... "The judge is the last person he sees, his last social life, his last chance to get out of his cell lined with post -it on which he scribbles”, decrypts Corinne Herrmann.

An infinite patience turned towards a single goal: to obtain the truth.

Short hair and soft voice, Sabine Khéris knows exactly where she is going.

Like a chess player, she advances her pawns without leaving anything to chance.

A manipulator at will, Michel Fourniret is not easily fooled.

But, on November 27, 2019, when she stuck him on a question, he ended up paying tribute to her in his own way: "You are a good player...", he smiles.

A decried role in the crisis of "yellow vests"

A good player who knows how to surround herself.

His success in this case is also that of the clerk who has been supporting him for years.

“A formula 1”, loose a lawyer who knows it.

“An exceptional person who knows the file inside out,” adds Corinne Herrmann.

They started working together in Nanterre (Hauts-de-Seine) when Sabine Khéris went to the instruction after years at the prosecution.

"At the time, she was reluctant and relentless in pre-trial detention", tackles a Parisian lawyer.

Nothing to slow down his journey.

In 2012, she arrived in Paris and was entrusted with important files.

That of the bombardment of Bouaké (Ivory Coast), in which nine French soldiers lost their lives in 2004. Intransigent, she points to the responsibility of Dominique de Villepin, Michèle Alliot-Marie and Michel Barnier.

But it is not followed by the Court of Justice of the Republic.

It is also she who investigates the case of the "wall of idiots" and decides to send her colleague magistrate Françoise Martres before the court.

Without blinking.

We are then in 2015. At the time, Sabine Khéris also scraps with the lawyers responsible for defending those under house arrest in the context of the terrorist state of emergency.

Including Arie Alimi.

“I see that we are plaiting a lot of praise for him today, explains the lawyer.

But for me, he was above all someone who protected the administration at that time.

“Responsible for defending many” yellow vests “, he also thinks that she has not really changed since.

“She is the oldest investigating judge.

It is therefore responsible for setting the deposit that is requested from people who want to file a complaint with a civil action.

It is a central role, he explains.

Well, she demanded colossal sums from the penniless "yellow vests" who wanted to file a complaint against the police.

Sometimes up to 8,000 euros… The aim was to prevent prosecution…”

Our file on Michel Fourniret

"With Fourniret, it's adventure"

But the mobilization of "yellow vests" ran out of steam.

And Sabine Khéris is now busy with something else.

Of the hundred files that populate his office, it is that of the disappearance of Estelle Mouzin that mainly occupies him today.

“She understood that Fourniret was aging and that time was running out, continues one of our sources.

I regret that she did not recover this file five years ago…”

But Sabine Khéris has more hope than ever to close this file and find the girl's body.

As of this Monday, she summoned the archaeological and military experts with whom she is used to working.

Destination: Ville-sur-Lumes, in the former house of Fourniret's sister.

It was there that he killed Estelle Mouzin, according to the confessions of Monique Olivier.

It remains to be seen where he hid the body.

The judge planned to research for a week.

"Only Monday's program is fixed," says one of our sources.

Then, she will adapt to what Fourniret will say or do.

With her, it's adventure..."
