• Some 3.3 million passengers passed through Nantes-Atlantique airport in 2021.

  • Traffic has increased by 42% compared to the dark year 2020. But it remains much lower than 2019.

After the catastrophic year 2020 of the air sector due to the health crisis, Nantes-Atlantique airport regained color last year.

Some 3.3 million passengers indeed landed or took off in Nantes in 2021, according to figures from the operator Vinci Airports.

Compared to the previous year, attendance therefore rebounded by 42% thanks, in particular, to a satisfactory summer and sustained fall traffic.

Domestic holiday flights and those to southern Europe were the best performing. %)”, gives Vinci Airports as an example.

Nothing to get excited about though.

Because if we take a step back, we see that traffic in 2021 remains 54% lower than that of 2019, a record year, just before the crisis.

We even have to go back to 2011 to find attendance of around 3.3 million annual passengers.

Optimistic trend for 2022

Commercial aircraft movements also increased significantly in 2021 (+22% compared to 2020) but to a lesser extent than passenger traffic.

Which therefore means that the planes were fuller.

Good news for residents exposed to noise pollution.

The total number of landings and take-offs at Nantes-Atlantique remains 55% lower than in 2019.

For 2022, the trend is rather optimistic.

Several companies, such as Transavia, Volotea, EasyJet, Corsair, Swiss or Sky Express have confirmed the opening of new lines in Nantes from December or for the next summer season, "suggesting an acceleration in traffic in the months to come”, predicts Vinci Airports.
