The 34-year-old, a three-time Stanley Cup winner with the Penguins, becomes the second player in franchise history to reach that mark.

However, he remains far from the record set by his compatriot, the legendary Mario Lemieux, who took him to 690 goals.

The latter complimented and encouraged Crosby: "I got to see most of his goals, I'm sure there will be many more".

"Sid the Kid" scored his 500th power-play goal in the first period, on a pass from Evgeni Malkin, making it 2-1 for Pittsburgh.

After the puck entered the goal, all his teammates jumped for joy on what is considered one of the best hockey players in NHL history.

This historic goal is certainly his most important since the "golden goal" scored in overtime which gave Canada the Olympic gold medal against the United States in the final of the Vancouver 2010 Games tournament.

Crosby was also the mainstay of the Canadian team that retained its title at the Sochi Games four years later and was crowned world champion in 2015 in the Czech Republic.
