The Spanish director Carla Simón has won the Golden Bear at the 72nd Berlin Film Festival.

Her film "Alcarràs" tells the story of a family of fruit growers in southern Catalonia who are threatened with eviction.

The prospect of their peach trees being replaced by solar panels divides family members.

“Alcarràs” was one of eighteen entries in the Berlinale competition.

The international festival jury, chaired by American director M. Night Shymalan, awarded the Grand Jury Prize to Hong Sang-soo's South Korean entry “The Novelist's Film”.

A Silver Bear as a jury prize went to the Mexican feature film "Robe of Gems" by Natalia López Gallardo.

French director Claire Denis was awarded the Berlinale Director's Prize for her love story "Avec amour et acharnement" starring Juliette Binoche and Vincent Lindon.

The Cambodian contribution “Everything Will Be OK” by Rithy Panh received an award for the best artistic achievement.

The jury awarded the prize for the best screenplay to the German author Laila Stieler for her script for Andreas Dresen's film "Rabiye Kurnaz against George W. Bush".

In addition, the German-Turkish comedienne Meltem Kaptan received the award for best leading actress for the title role in Dresen's film.

"Rabiye Kurnaz vs. George W. Bush" describes Murat Kurnaz's mother's fight for the release of her son who was imprisoned in Guantanamo.

The documentary film “Mutzenbacher” by the Austrian Ruth Beckermann was awarded the best contribution in the “Encounters” festival series.

Director Kurdwin Ayub received the award for the best debut film for her debut “Sonne”.

Because of the corona pandemic, the Berlinale Bears were awarded after six days instead of the usual ten days this year.

Over the next four days, the general public will have the opportunity to watch the films from the various festival sections.
