Last summer, Nytorgsmannen was charged with 24 rapes, one of which was aggravated, as well as aggravated assault, sexual assault and child pornography, against a total of 24 women.

In the district court, he was sentenced to five years in prison for seven rapes.

However, the prosecutor had demanded a much higher sentence - twelve years in prison for significantly more rapes

"A valuation"

Today, the Court of Appeal upheld the district court's judgment.

- What the court should do is to look at all these crimes and think about where this is on the Swedish penalty scale, which begins with a fine and ends with life imprisonment.

Then you have to make an assessment of it, says lawyer Johan Eriksson.

- Then, of course, there are various aids such as penalty scales to lean on.

You can see it as a time axis, for murder it is, for example, ten years to life.

And here the court has come to the conclusion that five and a half years is right.

But why get a penalty rebate if you commit multiple rapes?

- Our system knows no longer a fixed-term sentence than imprisonment for 18 years.

We can not impose longer sentences.

If we did that, we would have this American system where you can get 300 years in prison.

"Severe punishment"

But the prosecutor demanded in twelve years?

- The prosecutor was not right.

12 years sounds like a severe punishment.

If we return to this scale, you can kill someone for that.

Johan Eriksson believes that it would be good if the Supreme Court took up the case or a similar case.

- One could give the courts a little clearer guidance and also explain in a way that the public understands.
