- As I see it, we have a company, a listed billion-dollar company, which has taken our fine diamond, the Orrefors brand with it, and so they have left the shit, quite frankly, to us who exist and operate and live in Orrefors above all, but in the whole of Nybro, says Nybro's municipal councilor Christina Davidsson (C)

For some time now, a dispute has been going on between Nybro municipality on the one hand, which threatens New Wave Group with a fine of close to SEK 5 million if parts of the old glassworks area are not cleaned up from remnants of glass production.

On the other hand, New Wave Group, which does not consider itself responsible for the associations that ended up in the glassworks area before the current environmental legislation and before they became owners of the closed glassworks in Orrefors.

New Wave has appealed the municipality's injunction.

Has been sold to subsidiaries

- After we have looked at this, we have come to the conclusion that it must be New Wave Group that will pay for the clean-up, says Christina Davidsson (C).

But they sold the property several years ago.

- Yes, they have sold to subsidiaries that are in the same group and the responsibility is transferred between the different companies, but it is the parent company that must have the final responsibility for what happens in the subsidiaries.

The poisons scare away new stakeholders

The order given by the municipality to New Wave Group is that the empty premises in the area must be examined and decontaminated so that they can be used again.

Today there is a lack of knowledge about how polluted they are.

Christina Davidsson says that the municipality occasionally receives inquiries from other companies that show interest in the premises in the closed glassworks.

- It is about different companies that could provide jobs to our municipality, but when you then get knowledge and knowledge about the environmental debt that exists in the area, then you back off.

And that is completely understandable, says Christina Davidsson (C).
