United Kingdom Queen Elizabeth II wants Camilla to be queen consort
In 2017, a year before he died, the
husband of the Queen of Denmark
starred in one of his last scandals.
By way of public protest, he declared that if he was not raised to the dignity of king consort he did not want to be buried in the crypt he already had reserved in the royal vault at Roskilde Cathedral when he died.
"My wife has not given me the respect that a normal wife should give her spouse
. She has failed me and treated me like a fool. If she wants to bury me with her, she has to make me a king consort," he let out an angry
Enrique de Monpezat, husband of Margarita II, who worked unsuccessfully for decades on this goal.
His case becomes topical again after what happened with Camilla Parker, wife of Charles of England, who has just seen paved the way to become the future queen consort
when Elizabeth II dies
, in strict compliance with historical tradition.
The fight for equality
has been entering very slowly through the windows of European palaces.
And there are still
discriminations
as indigestible as the prevalence of men over women in the order of succession in three of the parliamentary monarchies that exist today in the Old Continent: Liechtenstein, Monaco and... Spain.
An
accommodating political class and always unconcerned about matters that concern the Crown
has not wanted to face in 45 years the change of article 57.1 that enshrines this anachronism.
But there is an issue in which discrimination affects exclusively men: that of the title and treatment received by the consorts of queens in Europe.
Unlike what happens with the wives of kings,
if they are they have to settle for being prince consorts.
It is a debate that periodically opens up because this issue is not in keeping with the egalitarian era to which we aspire.
And the issue is going to be put on the table in many palaces since in the coming years
Europe is going to be filled with titular queens.
For example, in Sweden they have been wondering for years
what title Daniel,
husband of today's heiress Victoria, will receive when he receives the crown.

And it's not just about titles.
Discrimination also affects treatment.
While the consort queens, equal to their husbands, have the Majesty, the consort princes must settle for the Royal Highness.
In Spain, finally,
Eleanor's
future consort
will not be king either,
despite the fact that here we have the precedent of Isabel II's husband, Francisco de Asís, who was.
We have gone backwards.
Article 58 of our Constitution distinguishes between "the Queen consort or the Queen's consort...".
But, in addition, the Royal Decree 1368/1987 on titles, titles and honors of the Royal Family and the Regents is unequivocal: "The Queen of Spain's consort, while he is or remains a widower, will correspond to the Dignity of Prince He will receive the treatment of Royal Highness and the honors corresponding to his Dignity that are established in the legal system."
Finally, let us highlight the paradox that, if the most widespread interpretation is made of the precepts that affect the royal family -since the Legislator has not yet heeded the recommendations of the Royal Academy contained in the 2020 report on inclusive language -,
if a future queen of Spain were to marry a woman, she would be a princess consort,
while if a king married a man, he would have every right to be treated as king as well.
