• Russia Alexei Navalny, one year being the most famous prisoner of Russia

A Russian court on Tuesday began examining a new case against the Kremlin's main opponent,

Alexei Navalny

, already jailed for more than a year for a fraud case and facing another ten years in prison.

Navalny appeared in a courtroom at his prison, about a hundred kilometers from Moscow, dressed in his prison uniform and shaved, along with his lawyers and surrounded by several guards.

The opponent hugged his wife

Yulia Navalnaya

during a technical break at the beginning of the hearing due to a sound problem. Hours earlier, she had criticized the "cowardice" of the Kremlin, calling the new accusations against her husband "illegal" and "dishonest." , in a post on his Instagram profile.

Navalny, 45, was already sentenced to two and a half years in prison in February 2021 in a fraud case that he denounced as having political intent and being "rigged".

The anti-corruption activist is currently serving his sentence in a penal colony in Pokrov, 100 km east of Moscow.

It is from this prison from where the trial is being carried out, which opened on Tuesday, an exceptional measure that was denounced by supporters of the opponent.

In this new trial, Alexei Navalny is accused of having embezzled more than 4.7 million dollars in donations paid to his organizations, charges punishable by a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison. Navalny also faces up to six months in prison. for

contempt of court

during one of his hearings last year.

The two cases are tried in the same trial.

In 2020, Alexei Navalny spent several months recovering in Germany after surviving nerve agent poisoning, for which he blames President Vladimir Putin. Enemy number one of the Kremlin, he was

arrested in January 2021 upon his return to his country

and sentenced in a previous case of fraud that it considers manufactured from scratch.

His conviction provoked a barrage of criticism and new Western sanctions against Moscow. In June 2021, the main opposition organizations, in particular its Anti-Corruption Fund (FBK), were, for their part, described as "extremist" by the courts, a decision that led to its closure and prosecution against it.

many of its activists, many of whom are now in exile. At the end of January, Navalny himself was included in the list of "terrorists and extremists."
