A 13-year-old girl died Monday in a fire that broke out in a building in Garges-lès-Gonesse (Val-d'Oise).

The alert was given around 1 p.m. by a resident of the nine-story building, firefighters said.

The fire broke out in an apartment on the third floor and spread to two neighboring dwellings, the prefecture told AFP.

Unknown origin

The fire was extinguished shortly after 2 p.m. and mobilized 120 firefighters.

During the evacuation of the occupants of the building, a young girl "was missing and was found dead on the upper floors," said a source close to the investigation.

According to La Gazette du Val-d'Oise, the emergency services could not do anything to revive her.

Seriously intoxicated, this 5th grader was declared dead on the spot.

The cause of the fire is currently unknown.

Twenty-nine people were treated for injuries, firefighters said.

They were evacuated to a gymnasium in the town.

Seven victims were rushed to hospital.
