People in Fukushima, Japan rally against the discharge of nuclear-contaminated water into the sea

On the 13th local time, people in Fukushima Prefecture rallied in Iwaki City to oppose the Japanese government's decision to discharge sewage into the sea.

The rally was initiated by the local environmental protection organization in Fukushima. Starting from 12:30 on the same day, representatives of citizen groups in Fukushima Prefecture, members of environmental protection organizations and people of insight from all walks of life made speeches, from questioning the justification of the Japanese government's decision to discharge sewage into the sea. Opposition was expressed in many aspects, such as the nature of pollution and the harmfulness of sewage discharge into the sea.

Although Japan's Tokyo Electric Power Company said it would discharge diluted nuclear-contaminated water about 1 kilometer from the coast through an undersea tunnel, local people did not trust this approach.

Kazuyo Sato, Member of the Iwaki City Council of Fukushima Prefecture:

Is it really safe to dig a one-kilometer tunnel under the sea?

Experts have clearly pointed out that there is a problem with the foundation of the tunnel, but only three drilling surveys have been carried out.

Experts also pointed out that there are also problems with the detection methods of nuclear-contaminated water, and we have asked the Fukushima prefectural government to earnestly protect the lives of Fukushima residents.

Regarding the plan of discharging sewage into the sea, the objections of the people of Fukushima have not been fully heeded by the Japanese government and TEPCO for a long time.

During the IAEA's visit to Japan, the people of Fukushima hope to disclose more details of the nuclear-contaminated water, and call on more people to pay more attention to the protection of the marine environment.

Residents of Fukushima Prefecture:

The discharge of nuclear-contaminated water into the ocean is not only a problem in Japan, but also concerns marine life safety and environmental pollution around the world.

I hope to do my little bit to speak out against it.

Residents of Fukushima Prefecture:

Tokyo Electric Power Company insists on discharging nuclear-contaminated water into the ocean, completely ignoring our voices and not conducting public opinion polls. I think this way of doing things is unfair.

Residents of Fukushima Prefecture:

We didn't get an exact explanation at all. No matter what the government and TEPCO said about the safety of (discharging sewage into the sea), they couldn't convince us, and they should clarify it to us.
