In order to be able to investigate a plane crash, it is extremely important for the accident investigators to find the damaged aircraft parts.

This shows the case of the Air France aircraft of the type A380 Airbus, whose engine exploded above Greenland in 2017.

- I must admit that I thought: "Shit, now it's over", says the flight attendant Silvie Schurck, who together with the other 496 people on board survived the accident, after an emergency landing in Canada.

Disproved false hypothesis

After two years of searching for the engine parts and additional time to examine the metal components, the French Accident Investigation Board BEA was able to establish that the first hypothesis that the engine was damaged by a mechanic during an inspection was incorrect.

The real cause was due to the manufacturing process of the engine parts.

The results of the investigation have now led to the production being reviewed and the more than a hundred planes flying with the same engines being further inspected to ensure that flights with them are safe.

Hear the onboard staff talk about the accident - and see when the investigators finally manage to dig out the missing engine part from the ice, in the clip above.

The world of science - The crash experts can now be seen on SVT Play, or on SVT2 20:00 on 14 February.
