The banking and insurance company has compared young people's average incomes in different municipalities with housing prices and concluded that a loan will be granted in only 10 of 25 major cities in Sweden.

In Eskilstuna, a 27-year-old earns an average of SEK 19,597 after tax.

A one-room apartment of 39 square meters is estimated to cost SEK 1,038,765.

With a cash contribution of 15 percent, the salary is not enough to get a loan approved.

- Remaining to live on the calculation shows minus SEK 728, ie the individual can not afford to be able to buy the apartment and manage their expenses, says Jonatan Ohlin, press officer at Skandia.

Yes to loans in Västerås

In the neighboring municipality of Västerås, a 27-year-old earns about a thousand kronor more than in Eskilstuna - 20,553 kronor.

Although an apartment of 39 square meters is slightly more expensive than in Eskilstuna, SEK 1,056,939, a loan will probably be granted.

- Remaining alive on the calculation shows that the individual has SEK 131 plus per month, so the person manages just over the limit to be able to buy, says Jonatan Ohlin.

Lower wages and more expensive housing

Just two years ago, Skandia made a similar report which shows that a young adult with an average monthly income can afford to buy a one-room apartment in both Västerås and Eskilstuna.

But in two years, the gap between the monthly incomes in the municipalities has increased and the prices of apartments in Eskilstuna have risen more than in Västerås.

According to the latest figures from Swedish Real Estate Statistics, housing prices in Eskilstuna rose by 14.9 percent in Eskilstuna and 11.9 percent in Västerås between 2020 and 2021.
