A year ago it had to be cancelled, the traditional spring flower show in the Palmengarten, which, along with the rose exhibition in June, is one of the magnets for visitors.

But in February 2021, the pandemic left the exhibition organizers with no choice.

The doors to the gallery at the palm house had to remain closed, as did those of the entire show garden.

Visitors were only allowed to enter the outdoor area again at the beginning of March.

Last year, the gardeners quickly planted the early bloomers, which had been brought forward for the spring show for weeks, into the beds in the outdoor area so that the effort was not in vain.

Everything is as it should be this year: the gardeners have been able to live it up and arranged everything in such a way that red tulips, blue hyacinths, yellow daffodils, white daffodils, purple crocuses and primroses in every imaginable color come together.

Squill and Wood Anemone

This splendor is "rest for the soul," said environmental department head Rosemarie Heilig (Die Grünen) at the opening.

But the show also gives suggestions on how to stage spring in your own garden or on the balcony.

After all, you don't really need much for the early bloomers: if possible, a whole row of flower bulbs and soil in which to bury them in good time in autumn.

Information boards also show which early bloomers can already be discovered in nature, such as the delicate grape hyacinth, the dwarf iris, the squill or the wood anemone.

Palmengarten Director Katja Heubach is happy that they can already be seen in the Palmengarten, but she also wonders what it means when everything seems to be blooming and sprouting earlier and earlier.

After all, plants need their pollinators, the insects, and it remains to be seen whether they will continue to be out and about at the right time.

The spring flower show can be seen up to and including Sunday 20 February.
