Al-Burhan confirms that the army will leave the Sudanese political scene if a national consensus is reached

The Chairman of the Sovereignty Council and Commander-in-Chief of the Sudanese Armed Forces, Lieutenant-General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, said that the Sudanese army will exit from all political frameworks if a national consensus is reached through the elections.

Al-Burhan affirmed in a lengthy interview with Sudan TV, excerpts from the official news agency (SUNA), that he does not want to rule and does not want the army to rule, noting that Sudan since independence has been in a vicious circle of governance between civilians and the army.

Al-Burhan pointed out that the constitutional document is tainted by major shortcomings because it was signed between two parties, the Military Council and the Forces of Freedom and Change, and isolating the rest of the components of the Sudanese people from participation, adding that the course had to be corrected and this led to what happened on the 25th of last October.

Al-Burhan stressed that the transitional period can still seek to hold dialogues for all political components, and for everyone to reach consensus.

And the Commander-in-Chief of the Sudanese army expressed his dissatisfaction with the demonstrations that are emerging calling for the return of the army to the barracks, stressing that this will not happen unless an agreement is reached and legitimacy is found through the elections.

Al-Burhan also stressed the serious effort to hold elections in the middle of the year 2023, and called on the parties to prepare themselves to run for them.
