Protesters in Sudan take to the streets again to denounce the coup and arrests

Sudanese protesters organized rallies in neighborhoods in the capital, Khartoum, and other parts of the country on Thursday to denounce the military coup that took place in October and a campaign of arrests of political figures.

Today, Thursday, hundreds of protesters deviated from the pre-set paths in a new attempt to reach the presidential palace, but the security forces confronted them with tear gas and with a heavy presence in an area a little more than a kilometer from the palace.

Other protests took place on the other side of the Nile, in the cities of Omdurman, Bahri, Gedaref and Sennar.

Yesterday, Wednesday, the authorities arrested two prominent political critics of the army, Khaled Omar Youssef and Wagdi Saleh.

The Sudan News Agency quoted Brigadier Al-Taher Abu Haja, media advisor to the President of the Sovereign Council, Lieutenant-General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, as saying in a statement that their arrest was not for political reasons, and that investigations are ongoing.

A statement from the prosecution stated that Saleh and the others face charges of violating laws related to anti-corruption, foreign currency and financial procedures.
