The Open Foundation received $3.5 million from British American Tobacco to support the political activities of Renzi and his allies, according to prosecutors.

  Renzi was the mayor of Florence, chairman of the Italian Democratic Party and prime minister of Italy from 2014 to 2016.

Currently the Italian state senator, he leads the Vitality Party, a small centrist party in parliament.

It is reported that the court's first hearing will be held on April 4, when an investigating judge will decide whether to file a case and conduct relevant court investigations and trials.
