Extending maternity leave in the private sector by 60 days

The UAE digital government has confirmed that a female employee in private sector companies in the country is entitled to a 60-day maternity leave, which includes the first 45 days with full pay, and the next 15 days with half pay.

She stated that the employer must grant the employee maternity leave whenever she requests it at any time, starting from the last day of the month immediately preceding the month in which the birth is expected, according to an approved medical certificate.

She indicated that, after exhausting the above-mentioned maternity leave, the female employee can stop work - without pay - for a period not exceeding (45) continuous or intermittent days due to a disease that afflicted her or her child as a result of pregnancy and childbirth. The disease is proven by a medical certificate issued by the competent medical authority. This period is not included in the service period for which the employee is entitled to the end of service gratuity, or the period of participation in the retirement system in accordance with the legislation in force in this regard.

An employee, in the event that she gives birth to a sick child or of “people of determination” (with disabilities) and whose health condition requires an accompanying person according to a medical report issued by the medical authority, has the right to a leave of (30) days with full pay starting after the end of the maternity leave period, and she has the right to: Extending the leave for another 30 days without pay.


After returning from maternity leave and for a period not exceeding (6) months from the date of delivery, the female worker is entitled to one or two rest periods to breastfeed her child, provided that the duration of both periods together does not exceed one hour.

The nursing break is paid.
