Prosecutions are currently underway in 715 cases of corruption, fraud, embezzlement and other financial crimes, added Francisco Queiroz in the state daily, Jornal de Angola.

Over the past three years, the government has recovered 9.6 billion euros in assets in Angola but also in Great Britain, Switzerland, Singapore and Bermuda.

"The total amount seized and recovered in the country and abroad, amounts to 11,486,042,997.22 dollars", specified Mr. Queiroz.

Since coming to power in 2017, President João Lourenço has launched an anti-corruption campaign to recover billions believed to have been misappropriated during the long presidency (1979-2017) of his predecessor José Eduardo dos Santos.

Mr. Dos Santos, 79, is accused of having largely misappropriated national resources by favoring his family and relatives.

His daughter, Isabel, is being investigated for embezzlement of public funds.

The southern African country of 33 million people is rich in natural resources, but a large part of its population lives below the poverty line despite the oil windfall.
