New York City's public schools began offering vegetarian meals every Friday as part of the city's Department of Education's Healthy Food Choices initiative.

  The new food plan's menu includes vegan tortillas, seasoned broccoli, and black bean and corn salad.

  The New York City public school system is the largest public school system in the United States, serving 1.1 million students in more than 1,800 schools.

  The New York City Department of Education said in a tweet: "School choices of plant-based diets mean healthy eating and the beginning of life."
