China News Agency, Beijing, February 8th: Zheng Jian: "No commitment to renounce the use of force" is an integral part of the policy of peaceful reunification

China News Agency reporter Lu Mei

The situation in the Taiwan Strait has been complicated and severe in recent years, and some people have even described the Taiwan Strait as "ferocious and dangerous".

Zheng Jian, director of the National Taiwan Studies Association and chair professor of the Taiwan Research Institute of Xiamen University, pointed out in an exclusive interview with a reporter from China News Agency recently that the mainland's military countermeasures are aimed at "Taiwan independence" and international intervening forces, and "not promising to renounce the use of force" is peace. An important part of a unified policy.

"Taiwan independence" separatist activities are the source of tension in the Taiwan Strait

Zheng Jian pointed out that some politicians are trying to push the responsibility for the turmoil in the Taiwan Strait onto the mainland, saying that the mainland wants to "change the status quo on both sides of the strait", which is untrue.

Looking back at a few time points, it becomes clear that the "Taiwan independence" separatist forces and international interference forces are the culprits.

"On the basis of the '1992 Consensus', cross-strait relations have continued to improve for many years, and in 2015 reached the height of cross-strait leaders meeting in Singapore." Zheng Jian said, until the DPP came to power in 2016, and the US Special Committee in 2017 Trump came to power and the Taiwan-US alliance has repeatedly manipulated "Taiwan independence" provocations. The PLA's actions in the Taiwan Strait have gradually become the focus of the news. The sorties of military aircraft patrolling the Taiwan Strait are directly related to the "Taiwan independence" activities.

Thunder means must be used against "Taiwan independence" and international intervention

The mainland has already said it before: "Taiwan independence" means war, and division has no peace.

Zheng Jian said that the "Taiwan independence" separatist forces have used their long-term actions to prove that the mainland only uses the "gentle wind and drizzle" method is not enough, and must have thunderbolt means.

"Non-peaceful means" in the Anti-Secession Law mainly refers to military means, including military deterrent means.

Zheng Jian pointed out that the DPP has tasted the sweetness through negative manipulation of cross-strait relations and relying on the United States to seek "independence". In the face of the county mayor election in 2022, if the DPP continues to take risks, the situation in the Taiwan Strait will become more dangerous.

The DPP is the challenger to the status quo in the Taiwan Strait and the perpetrator of the military crisis in the Taiwan Strait.

"As President Xi Jinping said in the video meeting between the heads of China and the United States in November last year, if the 'Taiwan independence' separatist forces provoke and persecute, or even break through the red line, we will have to take decisive measures." Zheng Jian said, this is a warning to the United States, It is also a clear warning to the DPP authorities.

Peace can be maintained by fighting

The DPP authorities are trying to convince the Taiwanese people that if war breaks out in the Taiwan Strait, the United States will send troops to "protect" Taiwan.

Zheng Jian pointed out that after World War II, the United States had fought against the Chinese military in the Korean and Vietnam battlefields and ended in failure.

Today, the technical strength of the PLA's equipment has been greatly improved compared to decades ago, and it is even less afraid of the US military in spirit.

Today's world is no longer a place where the United States can do whatever it wants.

Zheng Jian believes that there is no such thing as "can or not" to resolve the Taiwan issue militarily, but only a matter of the price.

"The better and more advanced our troops are in training and technical equipment, and the more fully prepared, the lower the cost." He pointed out that at the end of last year, the spokesperson of the Ministry of National Defense, Colonel Tan Kefei made a systematic summary of the PLA's Taiwan Strait patrol, which can be learned from The following three aspects are interpreted:

  One is systematization.

Not only military aircraft, but also surface ships, underwater forces, shore forces, island and reef forces, strategic support forces and other elements are systematic operations and joint combat drills.

  The second is actual combat.

"Combat readiness patrol" means that it is both training and actual combat. The actions are completely organized according to the standards of actual combat.

The third is the two fronts against Taiwan and the outside world.

While deterring "Taiwan independence", it also considers dealing with international intervening forces, that is, "the goal is very clear, that is, to take decisive action to counter the vicious actions of forces inside and outside the island that frequently collude and challenge the one-China principle."

Zheng Jian pointed out that the DPP authorities kidnapped Taiwanese people into the "Taiwan independence" chariot, which also made the Taiwanese army exhausted and suffered deeply.

The Taiwan army does not know who to fight for and why, and its ideology and beliefs are confused; the awareness of combat readiness is lax, and the training standard is far from actual combat; equipment maintenance is insufficient, and accidents occur frequently.

Regardless of military morale, combat readiness training, public support, and social mobilization, the two sides of the Taiwan Strait are not on the same order of magnitude.

Regarding Tan Kefei's claim that the number of sorties actually dispatched by the PLA "will only be more, not less" than the number hyped by the DPP, Zheng Jian said that the military deterrence of the PLA's air power against "Taiwan independence" is a combination of both offense and defense, and a combination of far and near. Fly to where Taiwan's radar can see and firepower can reach.

The Taiwan side has neither the ability to fully grasp the air situation across the Taiwan Strait, nor may it deliberately turn a blind eye or hide some situations in order to continue to deceive the Taiwanese people.

"The number of 940 sorties in the whole year is only symbolic compared to the scale of the PLA's forces in the Taiwan Strait. It aims to warn rather than exert extreme pressure." Zheng Jian said, this also shows that the mainland has a strong interest in peaceful reunification. The sincerity of the "Taiwan independence" forces has not changed; and the attitude of taking decisive measures is also clear when the "Taiwan independence" forces collude with international intervening forces to challenge the one-China principle and resist reunification.

Zheng Jian also emphasized that the mainland adheres to the basic policy of "peaceful reunification and one country, two systems". Leaders have repeatedly emphasized in important speeches that peaceful reunification is sincere and goodwill, and it is also a practical policy, not an expedient measure.

Peace can be maintained by fighting.

At the beginning of the reform and opening up, "no commitment to renounce the use of force" was put forward at the same time as the policy of peaceful reunification.

As Deng Xiaoping pointed out in an interview with an American reporter when China and the United States established diplomatic relations in 1979, China strives to use peaceful means to resolve the issue of Taiwan's return to the motherland, but if it promises not to use means other than peaceful, it means "tying its own hands. It will hinder the realization of the good wish of peacefully resolving the Taiwan issue."
