The UAE pavilion at Expo 2020 Dubai hosted the "Search and Picking" exhibition, which highlights the importance of food knowledge and environmental perception in the UAE's geographical nature, in the presence of: Minister of Culture and Youth Noura bint Mohammed Al Kaabi, and Minister of Climate Change and Environment Maryam Al Muhairi.

The exhibition is the result of a collaboration between 11 local and international artists, residing in the UAE, and presents a special publication on the research conducted on the topics of nutritional knowledge and environmental perceptions in the Emirati geographic nature, which inspired the organizers of this exhibition, which was evaluated by Dima Srouji and Faisal Tabbara, and Maitha Al Mazrouei.

The exhibition is commissioned by Warehouse 421, the arts and design destination in Abu Dhabi, which deals with innovative practices and artworks, and seeks to highlight and develop local and regional talent, and in partnership with the UAE Pavilion, it explores the issue of food security and sustainable agriculture.

Authenticity and openness

The Minister of Culture and Youth, Noura bint Mohammed Al Kaabi, said: "The National Pavilion sheds light on the culture and heritage of the UAE, and on the values ​​of ambition, humanity, originality, openness, flexibility and optimism, which were passed down to us by our ancestors, and to which we are committed to charting the course of the future."

She added, "The UAE adheres to the importance of investing in human relations, which is clearly reflected in the innovative and artistic works presented by creators from all over the world in this unique exhibition."

For her part, Minister of Climate Change and Environment, Maryam Al Muhairi, said: "Food security is a vital priority in global politics, and the efforts made by the UAE demonstrate in practice how our country's history as a forum for civilizations, goods and ideas, continues to form the basis of our approach to meeting the needs of the future."

For his part, Faisal Al Hassan, Director-General of Warehouse 421, told Emirates Today: "The country's hosting of Expo 2020 contributed to spreading awareness of the issue of food security, in a global call for building reliable systems that contribute to changing the way food is grown and consumed, To reach the desired results in food security, in addition to launching the National Food Security Strategy 2051, which aims to eradicate hunger in the country, and around the world,” noting that the “Search and Pick” exhibition revolves around one question: What does it mean for individuals and groups to constantly research About food in the diverse and developed natural environments of the UAE?

He added: “This is the perfect time to nurture the work of artists and creators who address pressing issues at the global level from a local perspective, and we are pleased to collaborate with the UAE Pavilion at (Expo Dubai) to explore the importance of agriculture in the UAE geography, starting from the cultivation of arid lands, to the projects Pioneering and patriotism in the field of food security,” considering that “it is natural that climate change and the potential shortage of food and water are at the forefront of the topics covered by (Expo 2020 Dubai), and we want to tell the story of the UAE in this regard.”

Artist and photographer Tariq Al-Ghussein presents huge images that describe how people transfer the natural environment and shed light on the relationship between culture and environmental perceptions, while Reem Falaknaz addresses, through a series of photographs, the relationship between land and people across generations, and the interrelationship between them and the environment.

For his part, Ammar Al Attar documents seasonal fruit trees in home gardens in the Emirates, highlighting local plants as an indicator of the change of seasons. Types of seasonal products available in the UAE geographical nature despite its dry climate.

At the same time, artist Sheikha Al-Mazrou shows a series of circular art installations similar to the huge circular fields in areas of the UAE, the only ones that use center pivot irrigation methods.

The plastic artist, Mohamed Ahmed Ibrahim, seeks to motivate visitors to explore the story behind the artistic installation “grill” and the materials used in it.

charcoal drawings

Abdullah Al-Saadi displays charcoal drawings, titled “Sweet Potatoes”, each group of which is placed inside decorative tin cans that he had completed during the many camping trips he took part in over the years to the Hajar Mountains, the highest mountain range in eastern Arabia.

As for Abeer Manasra and Zina Khayat, they use mixed media in the form of threads on a mesh, to highlight seafood production, with a special focus on the intricacies of oyster farms.

Through the voices of people, the environment and the machinery of food production, Elaine Vasquez seeks to evoke the acoustic landscape of production spaces, and reveals the difficulty of cooperation between workers in them.
