United Kingdom Rare public appearance of Elizabeth II before her 70-year reign
Queen Elizabeth II has taken advantage
of the Platinum Jubilee
celebrations to decree, through a "sincere wish", that
Camilla Parker-Bowles
be considered "queen consort" once her eldest son succeeds her on the throne.
Until now, it was taken for granted that the wife of Prince Charles would be considered "princess consort" once that moment arrived, but the queen, who has asked
for the same support for her son that she has been given
during the 70 years of her reign, has decided to strengthen the position of the Duchess of Cornwall within the institution.
"I will always be deeply and humbly grateful for the loyalty and affection you continue to show me, but when the time comes,
my son Carlos will be king.
I know you will give him and Camilla the same support you have given me." , has expressed in a written message addressed to all the nations of the Commonwealth.
"It is my sincere wish that, when that time comes, Camila will be known as queen consort while she continues her own loyal service."
In this way, Queen Elizabeth
ends one of the debates that had opened in the institution
since Carlos and Camilla married in 2005, since it had always been taken for granted that she would never pass the rank of princess consort.
However, the queen has preferred to bet on giving stability and continuity to the institution once she is gone, and that is why at some point the Duchess of Cornwall
will be known as 'Queen Camilla'
and will be treated as 'Your Majesty' In fact, Carlos and Camilla will be crowned at the same time.
Both, for their part, have already spoken out, assuring that they are
"excited and honored" by the decision of the regent,
who this Sunday celebrates 70 years of her coronation. Today, however, no special celebrations will be held for this, although in June an event is prepared to commemorate a historical milestone, since no other monarch in history had previously reached the seven decades that Queen Elizabeth has been in the throne. What is expected is an
official thank you and congratulations speech from Prince Charles,
who was also appointed successor through another "sincere wish" from his mother in 2018.
In this way Camilla, 74 years old, receives the support she needed so as not to continue seeing herself pushed into the background within the institution.
On the wife of Prince Charles she has always cast the shadow of
Princess Diana's popularity,
and, in fact, she has not even dared to accept the title of Princess of Wales out of respect for her memory.
Even so, the public has always shown a
certain coldness towards her
, motivated in part by the extramarital affair she had with Prince Charles when he was still married to Lady Di, and that is why it was so important that the queen tucked her in before a eventual succession to the throne.
In December of last year, for example, Elizabeth II already named Camilla a
Dame of the Order of the Garter,
the most prestigious chivalric title in Great Britain, thus marking her growing role in the monarchy.
