The Assize Court of Maine-et-Loire decided otherwise.

On the night of Friday to Saturday, she sentenced this 25-year-old man to 18 years of criminal imprisonment for attempted murder of a vulnerable person and attempted extortion with a weapon.

Back in the accommodation, he had suffered a barrage of beatings, including stab wounds.

A neighbor had discovered him several hours later, bleeding and suffering from multiple fractures.

The Assize Court also gave a 12-month suspended prison sentence to three friends of the accused who had witnessed some of the violence without intervening or notifying the emergency services.

They were found guilty of failing to assist a person in danger.
