The announcement was expected and takes effect immediately.

The expulsion of the French ambassador and the request for the departure of the Danish contingent pushed the EU to keep its promise to follow in the footsteps of the sanctions imposed a month ago by ECOWAS.

The sanctions taken this Friday against the five Malian officials are classic sanctions from the European Union.

On the one hand, they are financial: their assets held in the EU are frozen, and any European resident is prohibited from making funds available to them.

The five sanctioned are also prohibited from setting foot on European territory.

Even in transit, is it well specified in the decision.

The list of the five persons targeted by these sanctions was published in the Official Journal of the European Union.

The highest sanctioned official in the Malian government is Prime Minister Choguel Maïga.

The president of the transition, Assimi Goïta is not on the list.

On the other hand, two other senior officers described as "

key members of his inner circle

" are there for their role in the overthrow of President Keïta.

They are Malick Diaw who chairs the national transitional council and Ismaïl Wagué, minister of reconciliation.

Also on the list are Adama Ben Diarra, from the transition council and Ibrahim Maïga, minister for refoundation.

They are both specifically sanctioned because they “

obstruct and undermine the holding of elections and the transfer of power to elected authorities

”.

Last week, the EU did not want to trigger these sanctions before the visit to Brussels of the G5 Sahel, but it had promised that it would be done well before the opening of the summit with the African Union in two weeks.
