This Tuesday, the pedestrian zone of Bordeaux gained 22 km of additional streets.

And by 2024, the pedestrian area will gradually increase from 40 to 65 hectares, in three phases.

Eight new terminals restricting access to motorized vehicles in the hypercentre were activated on Tuesday.

These are rue des Boucheries, rue du Loup (from the corner of rue du Pas St Georges), rue Ravez (between Alsace Lorraine/rue du Loup), rue de Guienne (between Palais des Sports/rue Teulère), rue Montbazon, rue de la Rousselle, the Quai Bourgeois service road and place Pey-Berland (next to place Jean Moulin/rue Montbazon).

80% of respondents in favor of pedestrian zones

These new devices work by reading license plates.

Namely that only the vehicles of residents, delivery people (from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m.), emergency and cleaning vehicles, are authorized to enter the enclosure of the pedestrian area.

Other vehicles can park in one of the three downtown car parks.

"Calming traffic responds to a strong expectation of Bordeaux residents who wish to reclaim the street and no longer suffer from transit traffic in their district" assures the city of Bordeaux, which highlights an Ifop survey carried out for Bordeaux Métropole carried out in February 2021 , in which “80% of respondents were in favor of the creation of pedestrian zones in the city centre.
