New York woke up to a great white coat on Saturday, January 29, as a "historic" snowstorm hit the northeastern United States.

A powerful and icy wind paralyzes transport and may have caused the death of a motorist north of the city.

In the trendy neighborhood of Cobble Hill, in Brooklyn, the sidewalks are almost deserted, covered with at least 30 cm of snow.

Some of the shops are closed.

"Happy Snow Day!"

("Happy snow day!"), Says a resident of the district, all smiles, leaving one of the small brick buildings typical of the district, with white roofs.

New York Mayor Eric Adams filmed himself Saturday morning in the Bronx borough urging his fellow citizens to stay home and warning that "Mother Nature tends to do what she wants."

State of emergency in New York and New Jersey

A state of emergency has been declared for the states of New Jersey and New York, whose governor Kathy Hochul has asked to limit travel but still fill cars with gas, water and blankets.

North of the New York metropolis, on Long Island, 25 cm have already accumulated.

Regional train lines are partially at a standstill, and a woman was found dead in her car according to local media.

The National Weather Service (NWS) is predicting wind gusts of 80 to 120 mph and has warned of "near impossible travel conditions" in the northeastern United States.

The NWS also predicts polar temperatures on the night of Saturday January 29 to Sunday January 30 and power cuts, which are usual every winter when the power of the wind or the weight of the snow tears out the power lines.

transport paralyzed

On the transport side, some 3,500 flights have been canceled for Saturday, and 700 already for Sunday, arriving or departing from the country, according to the FlightAware air tracking site.

In Boston, the big city of New England, the new mayor Michelle Wu warned on television that "the storm was going to be 'historic' and 'very bad' and people from Massachusetts rushed to the stores to buy shovels to clear the sidewalks, an obligation.

Even in the south, in usually tropical Florida, frost warnings have been issued with the risk of the famous iguanas weighing up to 9 kg falling from their trees.

This snowstorm is already the second of the year in eastern North America, after the one that enveloped regions from Georgia to Quebec in early January.
