The corona infection process remains very dynamic because of the omicron variant. The Hessian health authorities reported 15,114 new infections to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) overnight after 10,875 a week ago. That's an increase of 38 percent. Three more deaths related to Covid-19 have officially become known, the same number as last Saturday. The normal wards are filling up more and more with corona patients. The number is stagnating in the intensive care units. According to the state, 66.1 percent of the Covid patients cared for there are not or not fully vaccinated, 31.7 percent are. As a rule, someone who has received two injections is considered vaccinated.

Hospitalization incidence as a policy benchmark continues to rise. According to the RKI, it is now 4.74 after 4.24. It reflects the new corona patients admitted to hospitals within a week. A week ago it was 3.94 and seven days before that it was 2.62. This confirms the experience that increasing seven-day incidences also lead to more patients with a delay of about one week.

According to the RKI website, Offenbach remains the leader in the seven-day incidence in Hesse, ahead of the state capital Wiesbaden with more than 2000 each, although the indicator has fallen somewhat in both cases.

Due to the flood of positive tests, the Wiesbaden health department was recently in arrears with a four-digit number of case reports.

In Frankfurt, on the other hand, the number of new cases under 100,000 inhabitants recorded within a week is increasing.

Frankfurt is now also approaching the 2000 mark. The Hesse index rose from 1285 to 1351 overnight.

The federal average is just under 1128.

Ciesek: Omicron not more infectious

However, there has been confusion about the Frankfurt incidence for days, apparently for technical reasons: the head of the Frankfurt health department, Peter Tinnemann, suspects that the indicator is much higher than that given by the Robert Koch Institute in the daily overview.

The reporting software that the RKI works with is outdated.

After an update last week, difficulties arose that have not yet been resolved.

"The number of cases is underestimated nationwide," he said to colleague Marie Lisa Kehler.

The Frankfurt virologist Sandra Ciesek cannot confirm that omicron is more infectious than the delta variant of the virus.

Rather, the fact that the variant is better able to avoid vaccination than the previous variant is responsible for the spread of the variant.

Three injections still provide the best protection against a severe course of the disease, but they do not prevent the infection, writes colleague Monika Ganster.

The virus therefore finds many more hosts and the incubation period is shortened.

As can be seen from the RKI homepage, the incidence in Offenbach is now 2233 after 2279 the day before and in Wiesbaden 2005 after 2038. In Frankfurt it has increased from 1767 to 1957, whereby the reservations mentioned must be taken into account.

The Main-Kinzig district with Hanau comes to 1533 after 1521. For the Rhineland-Palatinate state capital Mainz there are 1370 in the statistics.

According to the Ministry of Social Affairs, Hessian clinics look after 952 corona patients in normal wards, almost 190 more than a week ago.

According to this, there are 199 Covid patients in the intensive care units, a tenth fewer than a week ago.

According to the RKI, 72.4 percent of the entire Hessian population is fully vaccinated against the corona virus.

If only the age group from 12 years is considered, the proportion is 82.7 percent.

49.7 percent of all have received the third vaccination, so are boosted.

For people over the age of twelve, it is 58.4 percent.

The whole of Hesse remains a hotspot.

According to the Ministry of Social Affairs, as soon as the incidence in a district or an independent city is over 350 for three consecutive days, additional hotspot regulations take effect from the next day.

“After five days below the limit, the region falls out of the regulation again.

The assignment on the day of the report always refers to the registered incidences of the three or five days before.” More information about the hotspot rules can be found here.
