"I will send soldiers to Eastern Europe and NATO countries soon, not very many," he told reporters on Friday.
Earlier this week, the United States put 8,500 troops on high alert due to the unrest in Ukraine.
They are intended to be used to strengthen NATO's rapid reaction force should it be activated.
