“Today, after several weeks of close consultations with Ukraine and partners in the Security Council, the United States called for a public meeting of the Security Council to discuss an issue of critical importance to international peace and security: Russian threatening behavior towards Ukraine and Russian troop buildup on the border. with Ukraine and Belarus,” Thomas-Greenfield said in a statement.

She noted that the United States sent a request to hold an open meeting of the Security Council on January 31. 

According to Thomas-Greenfield, members of the Security Council should "fully examine the facts and consider what is at stake for Ukraine, Russia, Europe, and the basic obligations and principles of the international order if Russia invades Ukraine."

Earlier, US Deputy Secretary of State Victoria Nuland said that in the event of an alleged Russian invasion of Ukraine, the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline would be stopped.

In December, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that Russian troops were deployed on the territory of the country and did not threaten anyone.

The Kremlin emphasized that Russia was not going to attack anyone.
