Just nu är mörkertalet stort gällande antalet smittade. Testerna räcker inte till alla som vill testa sig, och många är dessutom sjuka utan symtom.  Under onsdagen rapporterades 89 888 nya covidsjuka i Sverige. Men det kan röra sig om betydligt fler.

- The dark figure is greater than ever because many are advised against testing and many are also asymptomatic.

Then there are people who do not test themselves because they know that it takes three to four days before they get an answer.

So I think the number of cases is at least as large as the number of newly confirmed cases, says Tom Britton, professor of mathematics at Stockholm University and who researches the spread of infection.

"Will not have the pandemic left"

The explosive spread of infection also means that the infection must soon culminate.

Both Tom Britton and Joakim Dillner, professor of infection epidemiology at Karolinska Institutet, believe so.

- The infection will reach its peak and start to go down in one to two weeks.

And then it will go down again, almost as fast as it came, says Joakim Dillner.

He believes that there is a good chance that the pandemic will be over when the microwave wave has subsided.

- We will reach a point where so many are immune that we will not have a pandemic anymore, he says.

"Global immunity"

Tom Britton also believes that the restrictions will be lifted soon in several parts of the world.

- I would guess that most countries have lifted their restrictions within a couple of weeks.

There is light at the end of the tunnel and we are not far from there, he says.

Joakim Dillner believes that the omicron wave could mean the end of the global pandemic.

- It is spreading so fast over large parts of the world that we will approach something similar to a global immunity.

Then there is a good chance that we will at least for a while get out of the pandemic, also on a global level, says Joakim Dillner.
