"Russia's invasion of Georgia in 2008 and its aggression against Ukraine, which has been going on since 2014, demonstrates the intention to renew the Soviet empire, which collapsed in 1990-1991 thanks to the attempts of the oppressed nation to restore freedom," the head of the Latvian states.

He added that "no matter how hard Russia tries, the wheel of history cannot be turned back."

Earlier, the Russian Foreign Ministry said that it is hardly possible to seriously talk about the revival or restoration of the USSR, as Russian President Vladimir Putin has repeatedly said.
