The Spanish Catholic Church has agreed to return a thousand assets that it registered between 1998 and 2015 that did not really belong to it, but were owned by a third party or did not know who owned it.
This was announced in a joint statement by the Government and the Episcopal Conference, after a meeting in Madrid between the president,
Pedro Sánchez
, and the head of the Spanish Church, the Cardinal Archbishop of Barcelona
Juan José Omella
.
The announcement means that approximately one million assets that until now were in the hands of the Church are returned to their owners or, failing that, to the municipalities.
The Government has detailed that it will inform the local entities and the registries of all the information on the affected assets so that the regularization process can begin.
In this sense, the Church has expressed its "commitment to collaboration" to facilitate these processes to develop in the most agile way possible.
