A statement from the French foreign ministry said it was strongly advised to avoid entering border areas in northern and eastern Ukraine, while advising "to postpone any non-essential or urgent travel to Ukraine as much as possible".

At the same time, the Australian federal government issued a travel warning and asked Australians in Ukraine to "leave now", while the families of Australian diplomats in Kiev were evacuated.
