The celebration of African football is in mourning.

A stampede in front of a stadium in Yaoundé, before a match of the African Cup of Nations (CAN) between Cameroon and the Comoros on Monday evening, caused an unknown number of "victims", announced the organizers of the competition.

The results could be dramatic: a state media speaks of "half a dozen dead and dozens injured".

“There were jostling as we record everywhere else during large crowd movements.

We are waiting for reliable information on the victims,” said Abel Mbengué, spokesperson for the CAN Organizing Committee (CoCan).

No official report yet

The Cameroonian authorities have not yet communicated on any assessment.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF), which organizes the continent's flagship competition, for its part dispatched its secretary general "to the bedside of the victims admitted to hospitals in Yaoundé".
