- It is not possible to do anything once the tree is infected, then you have to take it down and plant new ones.

Otherwise, there is a risk that there will be a danger to the public if they remain, says Henrik Thell, CEO of Thells and supervisor for tree felling.

In February last year, 62 elms were felled in central Eksjö as a result of the elm disease, then with the hope that no more adjacent elms would risk becoming infected.

But elm disease has thus continued to spread in the city even after.

Vaccine against elm disease

A vaccine against elm disease has been developed and tested on Gotland, among other places, before.

But Henrik Thell believes that it is both too expensive and time-consuming to vaccinate all elms.

Today, a vaccine dose for an elm costs around five thousand kronor and a new dose must be given every year so that the elm does not risk becoming infected.
