Armenian President Sarkisian announces his resignation

Xinhua News Agency, Tbilisi, January 23 (Reporter Li Ming) Yerevan News: The Armenian Presidential Palace issued a statement on the 23rd that President Armen Sarki announced his resignation within a few days.

Sarkisian said in the statement that after long consideration, he decided to resign from the presidency after about four years in office.

Sarkisian said that since he assumed the presidency, he has actively used his work to enhance the country's international influence and promote the country's economic development.

But the president, as the head of state, has no actual power, and there is a contradiction between the two.

During difficult times for the country, the president does not have the necessary tools to influence the domestic and foreign policy-making process.

Sarkisian called for constitutional reforms so that the next president can work in a more balanced environment.

He said that the proposal does not seek to change the country's political system, but hopes to establish a national system of checks and balances.

Born in 1953, Sarkisian served as Prime Minister of the Armenian government from 1996 to 1997, and was elected President of Armenia in April 2018 for a seven-year term.

Armenia amended its constitution in December 2015, changing the country's political system from a semi-presidential republic to a parliamentary system.

According to the new constitution, the prime minister holds the executive power of the state, and the president is the head of state, a ceremonial position.
