The investigation will have to determine the precise course of the accident which took place on the night of Friday to Saturday in Saint-Herblain, causing the death of two young men.

In a statement, the Loire-Atlantique firefighters said they intervened on the Tréhillac road, in the suburbs of Nantes, at 1:26 am after a "violent collision" between two cars.

One of the two then deviated from its trajectory, ending its course in a stream. The vehicle was completely submerged when the emergency services arrived, but they were able to extricate the driver, who was in cardiopulmonary arrest. His passenger, still in the car, was however inaccessible. Despite attempts at resuscitation, the firefighters had to declare the deaths of the two young men aged 20 and 22, three days after the terrible accident costing the lives of four high school students in the Jura.

The driver of the other vehicle, "a 22-year-old man with minor injuries", was taken care of and transported to the Nantes University Hospital.

The rescue operation required significant resources, in particular the intervention of the gendarmerie and a dog brigade to search for other victims.

“The aquatic and terrestrial reconnaissance” made it possible to rule out this hypothesis, the press release concludes.
